How to combat or deal with Dental anxiety

 


Dental Anxiety is a common problem affecting as many as 36% of the population. Dental anxiety can affect people of all ages. Their are several coping mechanisms to help ease your fears and get you back in the dental chair. 

1.Communicate your concerns to your dentist; Be free to communicate your concerns to your dentist. So that they can explain each and every step from start to finish. They can also recommend techniques to help you relax and feel more comfortable at the appointment.

2.Breathing exercises; Deep breathing exercises can relax your mind and help you feel calmer. Breathing exercise cant reduce stress during your dental appointments. Do Breathing like Close your eyes and slowly inhale and exhale  through your nose. 

3.Mediation and muscle relaxation; Anxiety worsens while sittings in the waiting room or once you climb in to the dental chair in situation like this. Mediation is a practice to reduce all of your stress and increase your calmness. Before appointment if you can mediate it will make you calm and focused.\

Close your eyes or fix your eyes on an object and then allow your body to relax and then allow your body to relax. Pay attention to different parts of your body and make a conscious effort to release tension by relaxing entire body starting with your head down to your feet.

4.Hypnosis; This is a guided relaxation practice involves the conscious mind and creating a state of  calmnesss.

5.Distraction; If you can watch TV or a movie during your appointment or perhaps wear headphones and listen to music and try to engage yourself. Ask your dentist in prior whether watching tv or listening to music is okay while treatment going on.

6.Seeing happy images; Involves like visualizing happy images or thoughts while sitting in dental chair like think about funny or positive past memories.

7.Bring a friend; A supporter like relative/friend might increase your mind calmness. Ask your dentist in prior if any one accompany you in exam room with you.

8.Analgesia; Used to relieve pain by dentists. Typically use Nitrous oxide [ laughing gas] which is colorless and odorless gas. You breathe in before or during procedure.

9.Use Anxiety relieving medication.

10.Use Conscious sedation like taking and oral sedative a few hours before your appointment.

11.You can also give General anesthesia.

faint

change in behavior.
